The Brest schooner is a replica of a 19th-century military vessel known as an aviso, originally designed to deliver urgent letters or messages. Its duties were later expanded to include surveillance and protection of trade along the coasts of Africa and the West Indies.
A symbol of Brest and ambassador ship for the city, La Recouvrance is named after the city's most famous district, where sailors' wives prayed to bring back their sons or husbands who had gone to sea.
